No project is too big or too small for EMSL's Aquatic Microbiology Laboratory.
EMSL's aquatic microbiology services are directed by Bin Wang, Ph.D. Dr. Wang has studied and worked on aquatic environment for over 13 years with 12 peer-reviewed papers published in various journals, such as Environmental Science & Technology and Journal of Applied Phycology. He also has presented his research at 14 national and international conferences. Dr. Wang's expertise includes algae, bacteria, water quality, environmental fate and monitoring, and pollution control. Dr. Wang holds a Ph.D. in environmental engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology, and is a member of American Chemical Society (ACS), American Geophysical Union (AGU), and Water Environment Federation (WEF).
Sampling Guide
Algal identification, enumeration, and biovolume: M600 – M609, M621
600 – 1000 mL in 1 L plastic sample bottles or cubitainers. Preserve samples with Lugol's solution within 2 hours of sample collection. Store samples in the dark and under refrigeration.Algae permanent slides: M610, M611
100 mL in plastic sample bottles or cubitainers. Preserve samples with glutaraldehyde within 2 hours of sample collection to obtain a final concentration of 0.25 - 0.5% for phytoplankton (0.5 - 1% for periphyton). Store samples in the dark and under refrigeration.Biomass: M612, M613
100 - 1000 mL 1 L plastic sample bottles or cubitainers. Store samples in the dark and under refrigeration. Ship as soon as possible.Chlorophyll: M614 – M616
4 L for open ocean water, 1 L or less for river, lake, or estuary water, or the filter is clogged or almost (if filter on field). Store samples in the dark and under refrigeration. Ship as soon as possible.Taste and Odor Test: M617
200 mL, same day shipping on ice.Algal Toxins: M618 – M620
100 mL in glass containers and test within 24 hours. Store refrigerated if held up to 5 days.Protozoa: M640 – M643
EMSL offers our clients the choices of collecting and submitting bulk water samples (10 L) and/or field filtered sample (10 or 50 L) to our laboratory.Bacteria abundance: M644
10 mL for ocean water and 100 mL for purified water.Zooplankton: M645 – M650
450 mL in 500 mL plastic sampling bottle. Refrigerate immediately for 30 minutes, add 20 mL of sucrose formalin solution, fill to the top of the sampling bottle with reagent water, and tightly capped. The cap and neck are wrapped with parafilm to prevent leaks, and finally refrigerate before shipping.Permanent slide for zooplankton: M651
100 mL in plastic sample bottles. Add alcohol to bring a final concentration of ~ 70%, or Lugol's until a dark tea color. Store samples in the dark and under refrigeration.Microscopic Particulate Analysis (MPA): M653
100 L filtered on field. Others
